ECD is a beautiful, historical social dance that was popular from around 1650 through the early 1800s. Movies based on Jane Austen novels such as PRIDE & PREJUDICE or EMMA feature scenes with English country dancing at balls and parties.
NO PARTNER OR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! The dances will be taught and walked through with attention to learning the basic steps and style points. The music is prerecorded.
This class will be an introduction to English Country Dance designed for new dancers of all ages -- experienced dancers are welcome, as well!
Due to the ongoing strong response to Heritage House's latest free public art event at Heritage House, we now hold ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCE classes TWICE A MONTH on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays from 7 - 9pm. (Admission is free, of course!)

* SPECIAL NOTE TO REGULAR ATTENDEES (and FUTURE regulars :-) -- We are now in the early stages of planning an elaborate COSTUME BALL in mid-June 2018, so you'll want to start attending regularly to get your "dancing chops" up to speed.

Details of the COSTUME BALL will be announced IN CLASS closer to the actual date, HOWEVER, the ball will ONLY be open to 'seasoned regulars', as there will not be any time for instruction during the actual event -- thank you for your understanding.

DESCRIPTION:

English Country Dance is a beautiful, historical social dance that was popular from around 1650 through the early 1800s. Movies based on Jane Austen novels such as PRIDE & PREJUDICE or EMMA feature scenes with English country dancing at balls and parties.

This class will be an introduction to English Country Dance designed for new dancers of all ages -- experienced dancers are welcome, as well!

We'll learn the basic moves -- the set and turn single, two hand turn, star right & left, back to back, and changes of rights and lefts.

We'll then learn various dances from the historical repertoire of English country dances -- "Childgrove," "The Duke of Kent's Waltz," "Heartsease," "Indian Queen," "Sellenger's Round," and more!

NO PARTNER OR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! The dances will be taught and walked through with attention to learning the basic steps and style points. The music is prerecorded.

Nearly everyone is a beginner so no one need feel out of place!

* SPECIAL NOTE: Please bring a separate pair of soft-soled shoes for dancing (sneakers or flats) -- the 'slipperier' the better!
