Collage Workshop with Hollie Chastain
10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Instructor: Hollie Chastain
Space will be limited to 12 students
Hollie's workshops always fill up quickly so snag your spot as early as you can!
This one-day workshop will begin with a brief history of collage and introduce some favorite artists working in mixed media from history and today. We will look at different methods and applications of this extremely versatile medium to keep in mind as we explore substrates and adhesives and the addition of other mediums such as paint, ink and graphite. For part of the class we will be focusing on a technique using vellum and graphite paper as a stencil to break down a sketch into separate elements before rebuilding the composition from materials layered in gel medium on a wooden panel. Then we'll spend some time in guided experimentation mode using book covers and mixed media paper as substrate and building compositions, textures and layers combining clipped images with paint, drawn elements, stamps, and patterned paper. This workshop is open to all levels of collage and mixed media experience. Feel free to bring a sack lunch or snack.
Materials To Bring:
Small scissors that are comfortable to you. Hollie recommends the Fiskars 5 Inch Detail Scissors but any around that size that you find easy to work with on detailed cuts will work. Also, bring along any images, magazines, books, ephemera or printed paper that you find interesting and might want to use. Try to avoid papers with a very glossy surface. All other materials will be provided.
