Introduction to Chip Carving
10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Instructor: Daniel Clay
The workshop will be limited to 8 students
We are excited to have Daniel Clay back at Townsend Atelier for his popular carving workshop. In this two-day workshop, students will receive comprehensive instruction in the fundamentals of chip carving, a decorative technique in which faceted "chips" are removed from a wooden surface to produce geometric patterns, stylized images, lettering, and ornamentation. Through demonstrations, guided practice, skill-building exercises, and the completion of a decorative wall hanging, students will leave class with all the knowledge, experience and confidence to pursue chip carving on their own. One of the most attractive aspects of chip carving (especially for beginning woodcarvers) is that it can be accomplished at a high level with minimal tools and materials; all you need to become a great chip carver is a sharp knife, some suitable wood and a little practice.
The workshop will cover:
How to dress and sharpen a new chip carving knife
Proper technique, safe carving habits, and familiarity with chip carving's basic design vocabulary through the completion of a "practice board"
How to navigate grain direction to achieve clean results
Increasing facility and confidence through free-form and guided carving exercises
Historical and modern examples of chip carving from around the world and discuss design considerations specific to the craft
Selecting and preparing wood for chip carving
Methods of transferring patterns to wood
Techniques for finishing completed carvings
Completion of a final project: a decorative wall hanging
Students will go home with a selection of patterns for carving on their own
No prior woodworking or carving experience is necessary to take the class, but all are welcome! This class is best suited to those with little or no chip carving experience.
