REI Chickamauga Dam Lock Through and Brews
Price: $85 - $95
Join REI on a guided kayak tour in the heart of Chattanooga. We will paddle through the Chickamauga Dam Lock - a stunning marvel or human achievement at river mile 471 on the Tennessee River. The dam was built in the 1940's as part of Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal. In 1940 FDR personally came to Chattanooga to inaugurate the dam before a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands. Currently, Chickamauga dam is owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority and run by the Corp of Engineers. Our 4-mile trip will float through the dam and by the new lock that is double the size of the current one. As the 129 foot tall lock wall closes around us the water level changes 60 feet to equalize us with the water level on the other side. The lock gates open and we emerge on the other side of the dam. Our trip will conclude by us paddling a short distance to a local drinking establishment on the edge of the river where we can discuss our adventure over a round of beverages, care of REI.
