Le Papillon, first presented at the Paris Opera Ballet in 1860, comes to the Chattanooga stage with fresh new choreography by Artistic Director, Andrew Parker. Hamza, an evil fairy captures our heroine, Farfalla, and then turns her into a butterfly. Love is in the air when Prince Djalma and Farfalla meet and Hamza's evil forces are vanquished. This spirited ballet, with its colorful costumes and magical lush score by Jacques Offenbach, is ideal for all ages.
New Works highlights bold contemporary dance creations, tailor-made for Chattanooga Ballet. This year we premiere Illusion de Eden, choreographed by celebrated former Alvin Ailey dancer, Maggie Pelton, and For Then, a work of the human experience created by Christopher Stuart, Resident Choreographer of Nashville Ballet.
"We are so excited to present this beautiful and powerful performance of high-quality ballet performance to the Chattanooga community," said Andrew Parker. "Our guest choreographers are top notch and my new ballet Le Papillon (The Butterfly), based on the original French story, is rich with nature and tender love."

Maggie Pelton grew up in the New Jersey Ballet Company. Her studies expanded to other disciplines while attending the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Martha Graham and Jose Limon schools in New York City. After receiving her BFA in dance from the Juilliard School and a scholarship from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, she was asked to join Ailey II, which performed all across the United States and the Caribbean. Ms. Pelton had the great honor of being the last female chosen by Alvin Ailey himself to join his first company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre which tours internationally. Ms. Pelton has danced in television commercials and music videos and has gone on to teach, choreograph, and act as a consultant for dance and fitness in various projects. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at Belmont and Lipscomb Universities as well as a faculty member of Cookeville Leisure Services School of Dance and the YMCA of Middle TN. She continues to serve as a guest artist teaching master classes and dance workshops nationwide.
Christopher Stuart, Resident Choreographer of Nashville Ballet, has created dances for Nashville Ballet 2, Nashville Ballet, Quixotic Fusion and Ballet Arkansas. For the past three seasons Mr. Stuart has created pieces for Nashville Ballet's annual Ballet Ball with music performed by Holly Williams, Kellie Pickler, Clare Bowen and John Oates. In 2012, as part of Nashville Ballet's Emergence performance, he collaborated with ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. Additionally, he has choreographed and staged Macbeth for the Nashville Shakespeare Festival; and, for Nashville Ballet, he created Under the Lights a full-length work to the music of Johnny Cash performed by Sugar and the Hi lows, The Raven, and Seven Deadly Sins. In 2015, Mr. Stuart was a finalist in Ballet Arkansas' first annual Visions Choreographic Competition; and, in 2016 and 2017 he was awarded a choreographic Fellowship from the New York Choreographic Institute. Last summer, he created a new work for the National Choreographers Initiative in Irvine, CA.
