Sandhill Crane Kayak Tour at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge
Price: $75 - $85
Join REI on a professionally guided kayak tour to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge on the Tennessee River. You will see over 12,000 Sandhill Cranes spending the winter on Hiwassee Island, the second-largest wintering population in the Southeast. Sandhill Cranes can be up to 4 foot tall and have a wingspan up to 6 feet. The endangered Whooping Cranes have also been known to migrate with Sandhill Cranes and are spotted occasionally on the island. Fall migration and wintering in Tennessee happens from late October to March. This is a wildlife viewing experience like no other. You can also use this great opportunity to try out paddling and meet new friends at one of Chattanooga's natural treasures. An introduction to kayaking equipment and basic techniques will be provided prior to embarking on the journey. All kayak equipment and guides are included for these tours. Previous kayaking experience recommended, but not required. If you are interested in wildlife tours try our Bat Cave Sunset Kayak Tour at Nickajack Wildlife Refuge from May through October.
